    You will want to …
You will want to prune before the end of August, otherwise you will want to wait until spring to prune again unless you live in the south. If you prune in Sept. the new growth will not be ready for the first freeze when fall comes. It is always a good idea to try and keep the center of the plant open for air curculation. A good even pruning will keep your plant healthy.

    when is the best …
when is the best time to do it, can it be done in the fall, septemberish time?

also, do you just want to go around snipping the whole bush, or is it better to target the middle, or the outside, or what?
